We have a beginners chess game that is excellent at teaching peeps how to play chess. You should try it! On Thursday we had all kinds of kiddos and parents for our homeschool activities at 3:00 pm. At 4:00pm we had craft time! I LOVE programming. I know Mom sets it up just so I will have play dates.🐶😄 Dad took me home a little early today because Mom left right after work to drive to Sioux Falls to see Baby Everett. He’s two weeks old now. I had to stay home with Dad. Mom says my tail sweeps like a dinosaur’s (what’s a dinosaur?). On Saturday we had 15 peeps for Nintendo/Minecraft Game Clubs. There should be more after football season is over. I LOVE fall. It means more outdoor running time with Dad! Woof woof, Briar, speaking. :) I have some super cool news! We just got a new library assistant, Christina Torkelson. She’s so awesome and she has two really neat kiddos that come see me at the library, Solomon and Irene. They love me and like to play with me. That makes me happy. My mom is so excited to have Christina work with her at the library. Christina loves kids just like my mom does. Although I really wish Hans was staying. I love Hans. He’s a super tall guy, but he always bends down to pet me when I greet him (and Mom says I greet him far too enthusiastically, whatever that means). Mom is pretty bummed Hans is leaving. She really appreciates him and hopes this change is good for him. 😊 Mom visited the high school homeroom classes this past Wednesday and Friday mornings. She’s putting together a Library Youth Council for teen programming for our community. She has a couple more classes to hit this week then they’ll begin the journey of teen programming for the coming year. I just hope the teenagers like me. Maybe they will let me lick their faces! (Mom hates it when I do that.) I love making new friends. Our summer reading program is about to begin. Sign-ups for children, youth, and adults will begin at the library on Tuesday, May 30th!! Our theme this year is “Paws to Read!” (Mom says my paws are HUGE, but they seem just right to me!) There are lots of fun activities for all ages. Mom says reading is for everyone from tall to small and that reading can take you anywhere you want to go. I really like the books about bovines, no wait, equines…no, that’s not right…dogs. I like the books about dogs…yup, dogs. Here is the regular library line-up:

What activities, classes, or get-togethers of any kind would you like to see the Malvern Public Library provide for our community? Call my Mom, Lisa Formhals, or, Christina Torkelson, your assistant librarian, at the library (712-624-8554) to give your input on what activities you’d like to have offered at your library. May you get to play ball a whole bunch, Briar, the library puppy. Meeooowww, Thistle, here. :) It’s so good to have my parents and my annoying HUMONGOUS little sister home. Although, I must say that Briar isn’t eating my head near as much as she used to. We like to hang out and snuggle and that’s pretty pawsome. 😊 There were many children in the library this week, which makes me, Briar, and Mom sooooo very happy. We love kids. Adults are great too, especially the ones that hold me and give me lovies. On Monday the Little Tykes read stories about mothers and then made Mother’s Day posters for their moms. They did such a good job. They were absolutely purrrfect! On Wednesday we had Memory Mates where we keep our minds sharp with physical movement and brain games. We just love Valerie Ramsey. She’s the sweetest! Last Thursday night we had a super cool class about genealogy. Lois Trinity came from Red Oak and taught us all things Family Search Research Wiki. We only had a few people attend, but those who attended learned a lot and had a great time together. We are organizing a Library Youth Council made up of seventh to twelfth graders to meet, advise, and implement teen programming in our library and community. If you’d like to join us, let us know! Mom’s getting things together and preparing for the summer reading program. You should see all the games and activities that have been coming in the mail. I think the UPS guy might feel like he lives here! LOL Our theme this year is “Paws to Read!” (Get it? Pause to read?! 😹 It’s killin’ me!!) There are lots of fun activities for all ages. Mom says reading is for everyone from tall to small and that reading can take you anywhere you want to go. I really like the books about felines (I think that’s the word). Sign-ups for the reading program will start at the end of May. All ages are welcome. Knowledge is power! 😊 Here is the regular library line-up:

Call my Mom, Lisa Formhals, or, Hans Leitner, your assistant librarian, at the library (712-624-8554) to give your input on what activities you’d like to have offered at your library. May you get lots of snuggles, Thistle, the library kitten. Woof woof, Briar speaking. :) I was gone FOREVER! I didn’t see Mom, Dad, or Thistle for two whole weeks!! I missed them a lot. Luckily, I got to spend those two weeks at my doggy mom’s, Ellie’s, house in Cherokee, Iowa. My half-sister, Gweny, and I played and played and played. She’s a full-blooded Golden Retriever and is six months older than me, but I’m bigger.:) Mom took me to the vet’s office to weigh me last Thursday and I gained 5 more pounds in the two weeks we were apart. I weighed 66.5 lbs. and I’m a little over 7 months old. I don’t feel any different, but Mom says I’m quite a bit bigger. She says I have the gait (whatever that means) of a German Shepherd just like my doggy dad. Mom and Dad got home from Italy at 11:30pm and picked me up the next morning at 10:00am. It was so good to see them. I was excited, but a little unsettled that Gweny and Ellie weren’t coming with us. I really like playing with Gweny. We chew up lots of sticks and carry around, as well as play tug ‘o war with, lots of stuffed animals. We love to tear them apart. 😊 I have some pretty wicked scars on my nose. I kept getting cut and the Mitchells kept sending my parents videos of my owies and apologizing for my being maimed (not really sure what that means). Mom and Dad think my scars are cool and so do I. They think it looks like Zoro (whoever that is) marked me or that I was thrown in a briar patch. Parents are so silly. I’m happy to be back home with all the cats, but especially my sister, Thistle. It’s good to be able to snuggle with her again. I’m also excited to see everyone at the library. I’ve missed you!! Please come by and say, “Hi.” Tummy rubbing and ball throwing is always welcome. 😊 Mom’s getting things together and preparing for the summer reading program. Our theme this year is “Paws to Read!” There are lots of fun activities for all ages. Mom says reading is for everyone from tall to small. I’m hoping that some kids will come read to me and maybe even throw the ball. 😊 Sign-ups for the reading program will start at the end of May. All ages are welcome. 😊 Did you know that the Malvern Public Library has a new policy for check outs? It’s true! There are no longer late fees and the length of time for check outs has changed. Books can be checked out for 3 weeks with renewals as long as there are no holds by other patrons. DVDs can be checked out for a week, instead of two days, and you can renew them if there are no holds on them. So, if you had late fees on your account, you no longer do. How cool is that?! I love batting things around and plastic eggs make perfect targets. Mom’s getting things together and preparing for the summer reading program. Our theme this year is “Paws to Read!” Briar and I think it’s paw inspiring, I mean awe inspiring (whatever that means). There are lots of fun activities for all ages. Mom says reading is for everyone from tall to small. It’s just that opposable thumbs make it easier to hold the books. Anyway, I’m excited to spend more time with the kids when school gets out. I love getting snuggles and petses. This past Saturday we had a Team Lego Building Contest. Eighteen people and five teams competed. Fantastic creations were made while we all enjoyed the time together. Our first-place team was the Cool Cougars comprised of Dad, Bryant Rasmussen, and his two sons, Jacob, 9yrs old and Noah, 5yrs old. Great work team Cool Cougars!! Second place went to team Legotoriums comprised of Dad, Andrew Torkelson, son, Solomon 9 yrs old, and daughter, Irene, 5yrs old. Way to go, team Legotoriums!! Third place was awarded to Team Family Fun comprised of Mom, Jennifer Hensheid, Dad, Tyler Hensheid, daughters, Gianna, 9yrs old, Raelynn, 7yrs old, Cambria, 2yrs old, and son, Nolan, 5yrs old. Awesome team work Team Family Fun!! Our honorable mentions were team Rainbow Rangers and The Olsens team. All of their creations will be on display at the library for the next several weeks. Special closure dates- My Mom and Dad are going to Italy to visit their non-furry kids and grandkids in April so the library will be closed on several of the days that Mom is gone. The library will be unusually closed on:
We are so sorry to have to close on those days, but do not have any trained staff that is available to take over on those particular days. We hope you will be able to get what you need from the library on the days we are open. Library hours will return to normal on Wednesday, May 3rd. Thank you so much for your understanding. My Mom is so excited to hold and kiss her grandchildren. It’ll have been a year since she last saw them. (Grandma’s are so sentimental…) Also, Library Tails will not run for the two weeks Briar and I are not there at the library. We will pick up with volume 22 of Library Tails when we come back to the library. Hans said he would do the book and movie summaries, though. Special Programming:

May your purrs be ever strong, Thistle, the library kitten. Woof-woof, Briar speaking. :) Last Monday was a crazy day! We had Little Tykes Story Time AND Epp Foundation started excavating the west side Carnegie wall. I tried to convince Mom to let me help them (I’m a super good digger.) but she said, “No, no, no.” (I NEVER get to have any fun.) But at least there was super cool machinery that the kids and I got to see AND the workers were super happy to see me and Thistle. We got lots of loves. Mom didn’t let me hang out with the littles too much, today. She said something about 61.5 lbs of battering ram? Anyway, I had to watch from a distance and listen through the office door. I don’t know what THAT was all about. The littles made Easter egg crafts and put together an alphabet puzzle that sings the alphabet when you push a button. Mom said that the littles LOVED pushing that button…over and over…and over again! LOL She said the grandmas and moms had that puzzle all packed away before my mom could get to it.;) Epp Foundation worked on excavating and fixing that Carnegie wall for three days. Sometimes it was really loud. Mom said that the really loud machine was called a tamper. She said it packed the dirt back in nice and tight. I wanted to go help again (I LOVE to play in the dirt.) but Mom said, “No.” Why does she always say that? Mom’s getting things together and preparing for the summer reading program. She says there are lots of fun things planned. I’m excited to see the kids a lot more when school gets out. I love playing with the kids. My favorite game to play with them is ball. I like to chase the ball and bring it back to them so they can throw it again. I also like to play hide and go seek. Another favorite game is tug o’ war. Kids are THE BEST!! I love them. Oh, good news!! Mom said to tell you that the Malvern Public Library has a new policy for check outs. There are no longer late fees and the length of time for check outs has changed. If you had late fees on your account, you no longer do. Come in and see for yourself. It’s time you used your library again.:). “Nothing feels as good as a clean slate,” Mom says. May you get lots of belly rubs, Briar, the library puppy. Meeooowww, Thistle, here. :) Last Monday was a total blast! We had Little Tykes Story Time AND Sassy Sewers Group. The Sassy Sewers really loved me and Briar. They were all sewing quilts. Some were called Quilts of Valor. They were beautiful. They said to tell you that all who love to sew are welcome to come join them. It’s free and held once a month on the last Monday at the library in Carnegie. Briar got in trouble with Mom when she gave excessive hugs and kisses to one of the littles and made him cry. Briar thought she was being loving. She loves like a hurricane! I know, she loves to mouth me all of the time! She makes my fur all mucky wet and then I have to clean and groom for hours!! We got to meet Liz Baldwin’s 10-week-old puppy, Charlie, in the afternoon. He is super cute, but I didn’t trust him. So, I stayed in the library or Mom’s office. Briar didn’t trust the little guy either, at first. Then she tried to play with him, but her paws are just too big for such a little puppy. It’ll be fun to see if they have play dates as Charlie gets older. On Tuesday I made two new friends that love to pet me. They are super sweet girls. They come visit me after school on the days I am at the library. I love them. Book Club was fun this past Thursday. This week we did an easier puzzle because our 1000-piece puzzle kept getting taken apart by littles before we got together again. We’ll see how things turn out this week! LOL (Mom doesn’t know that it’s me that messes up the puzzles sometimes.;) Here is what’s happening at the library on a regular basis:

I got to play with the littles and many of them threw the ball for me! I was in total DOGGIE HEAVEN!! I’m trying to be more careful with the littles and not bowl them over like a bull in a China shop. (They are like Weebles, (whatever those are) but they DO fall down.) Mom was super proud of me. (It was really hard, though. I couldn’t help but lick them in the face. They are soooooo adorable!) Later that day I got to spend play time with more of my favorite friends. They took me out on a walk!! It was so much fun!! My big sister, Thistle, (she’s two and a half weeks older than me) is super good about letting the littles pick her up and pet her. I wish I was small enough for the littles to pick me up and snuggle me. But I’m a growing girl. I’m six months old now. I just had my half-birthday on April 28th!! Mom says she hopes I’m nearly through growing. She says my tail is a force to be reckoned with…not sure what that means, but I bet it’s good! Mom got to attend a STEM fair in Anita, Iowa last Thursday. I couldn’t go with her. Dad had to work, too, so Thistle and I stayed home. Boy was that weird. Then Mom left us again on Friday to attend a summer reading workshop. I’m not a huge fan of being left at home. I should go wherever Mom goes…it’s only fair. Last Saturday Mom went to work without me, AGAIN!! (I’m starting to get a complex.) She said they showed the new Puss in Boots movie and the kids, and adults, really enjoyed it. She said something about chocolate, soda, and popcorn not being good for dogs… Here is what’s happening at the library on a regular basis:

Thistle here. :) This last week was great! Monday morning we had Little Tykes Story Time and then Monday afternoon we had a Drangonland Adventures afterschool STEM class. We had six attendants for our six BeeBots and we learned how to code!! The bees dressed as dragons were a hoot! Amber, from our awesome extension office, taught our class. She was amazing. The rest of our week was good. Mom said book club was fun, but I missed it because I was at home playing with another kitten friend. That was so much fun, too!!! Mom and Dad went somewhere Thursday night and I didn’t see them until Sunday night. What was that all about?!!! I haven’t let them out of my sight since. Briar, speaking. :) Holy smokes!!! We had 30 peeps for Tykes Story Hour!! I was soooooo excited!!! There were so many little people. I just wanted to play with them, but Mom said that I had to stay in her office. She says I’m like a bull in a China shop, whatever that means. But all those little people in their cute little fire chief hats were so darn adorable!!! Our wonderful Malvern Fire Department brought their fire truck to show to the littles and give them and their moms/grandmas rides. Overall, they enjoyed it. Some of the littles weren’t too sure about it and decided to stay at the library. But they all enjoyed the Goldfish crackers and the fruit snacks. I personally think they would’ve enjoyed chewing a stick or chasing a ball more…I know I would. They also put together a fire truck puzzle while the different groups took turns getting rides. On Tuesday morning Dad didn’t feed me breakfast and took me in the car to town. I thought we were going visiting, but it turns out we went to the place where the man pokes and prods me then sticks a needle in me. This time they stuck me in a cage. What was that all about?! Next thing I know I’m waking up and feeling all woozie and my belly has been shaved, just like Thistle’s!!! Is this some sort of new club?! I didn’t feel so hot. Definitely not hungry. I felt better the next day, but Mom and Dad wouldn’t play ball with me. Did they suddenly just forget how to play? So weird. Tuesday evening the Friends of the Malvern Library had an entertaining and historical lecture, in celebration of women’s history month, called “Straight-laced Girls, Uptight Ladies, and Loose Women”. Fifteen people attended. An enjoyable evening was had by all! Thursday, due to the snow, the school had a late start so Mom didn’t get to go read to the kids. She was bummed. In fact, due to scheduling conflicts for both the school and library Mom won’t be visiting the school until April. This is what’s happening at the library on a regular basis:
