Meoowww, Thistle, here. :) This last week was a busy one. We had 21 peeps for Tykes Story Hour!! That was soooo awesome. Briar and I LOVE it when the kids come to the library. We really get to play on Monday afternoons with our friends Gianna, Raelynn, Nolan, and Cambria. Gianna and Raelyn love me, especially. They carry me around and give me lovies almost the entire time they are there…I LOVE them.❤️. Briar goes nuts with the kids. They run and play and sometimes the kids take Briar out for a walk. That makes her so very happy. We adore kids. ❤️ We’re pretty lucky. Thursday was a weird day. Mom and Dad didn’t let me have ANY breakfast…what in the world was THAT all about?!! Then, Dad drove me to the place where it smells like a million other animals and left me in a cage! The people there were nice. I don’t remember going to sleep, but all of a sudden I was waking up and my belly was shaved! WEIRD!! Next thing I know Mom is there to pick me up and when we left the building we just walked across the street to the library!! I was at Hilltop Animal Hospital!! Who knew?!! Mom said I was supposed to stay quiet so she put me in the work room by myself and closed the door. (She was worried about Briar eating my head and playing too rough…’cause Briar ALWAYS does. My Mom is always yelling, “Briar! Stop eating your sister!!” Anyway, I didn’t particularly care for being alone and I saw this cool metal step ladder so I climbed it and knocked it over and when Mom opened the door to check on me I bolted out the door into her office and jumped up on the desk. To my great delight, there were a few bits of kibble left in my dish so I tucked right in. I was STARVING, for Pete’s sake. Mom wasn’t too happy about the whole thing, but she had to leave to read to the kids at the elementary school then so I got away with it.:) She’ll forgive me. She loves me. On Friday at 4:00pm the Malvern Fire Department brought their fire truck to show to our after-school kids and took three different groups for a ride in the truck. They even got to run the siren when they got out of the town proper. So cool!!! Grown-ups got to go too! My Mom, Mary Beth Costello, and Jennifer Henscheid had their very first ride in a fire truck. Isn’t that hilarious?!! All the children who showed up had a blast. All received yummy snacks, as well. We so appreciate our fire fighters!! These amazing volunteers will be bringing their truck at 10:00am for Monday’s Little Tykes Story Time peeps. We’ll have to share those pictures in next week’s paper. The Saturday showing of On the Basis of Sex only had a few attendees, but all who came enjoyed it immensely. The movie was very well done. Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a name in the realm of politics that people either love or do not love. There is everything to love about the case she takes on in the movie. She fights for equal rights for a bachelor that is taking care of his elderly mother. He hires a nurse to help him care for his mother who requires around the clock care. In so doing, he deducts the wages he paid the nurse from his taxable monies. According to the law at that time, only women could be caretakers, so the gentleman was being taken to court for not paying enough taxes. Happily, Ruth wins the argument and thereby, precipitates the change of a biased law. Well worth the watch. Here’s a bit of the programming going on at the library on a regular basis:
Every Thursday afternoon my Mom goes to the elementary school and reads to 3-6 different classes. Miss Nielsen changes things up to spread the wealth. Saturdays (most activities appropriate for school age children and families):

Woof Woof, Briar, speaking. :) I’m five months old now, and I weigh about 50lbs. Mom says I’m going to be BEYOND GIGANTIC (I still don’t know what that word means). I’m chewing a lot ‘cause I’m losing my baby teeth. Hans found some on the floor when he was vacuuming!! Mom got annoyed with me when I was trying to get her to play tug o’ war with me and I got blood all over her pink slipper…oops…so I left a tooth on the edge of the couch for her. Just my way of saying, “Sorry…I love you, Mom!” This past week there was this big black thing on the front lawn of the library when we were leaving for home. It scared me so I barked and barked at it. I told Mom not to go near it, but she didn’t listen and I was sure it was going to eat her so I kept sounding the alarm. When Mom put her foot on the black thing I nearly jumped out of my skin!!! What was she thinking?!!! Is she NUTS?! That thing could’ve killed her! Lucky for her, I barked loud enough that the black thing didn’t dare touch her and she got away unharmed. Sometimes Mom’s should listen to their kids. May your Mom play tug o’ war with you! Briar, the Library Puppy! Meoowww, Thistle, here. :) What did you think of all that snow?! I thought it was wet and cold. Not really my cup of tea, but my sister, Briar, thought it was totally awesome…a pup entirely devoid of good taste. She’d get the zoomies in the snow and run around like a wild dog, periodically shoving her nose in the snow and flinging it in the air. You should’ve seen her when Mom was shoveling a walkway. Every time Mom threw a shovel of snow Briar would enthusiastically jump into the snowy cloud frantically biting as many snowflakes as she could possibly capture. Sometimes I think she’s not the brightest crayon in the box. 😉 But I gotta love her…Mom says so. On the far more fascinating subject of chocolate…Mom still won’t let me share her delicious chocolate delights from the start. I still just get the dregs. I only have three words for that kind of behavior…selfish, selfish, selfish. Last Monday for Tykes Storytime we had nineteen people!! There were cute little children EVERYWHERE! My mom was soooooo happy. After story time we did a construction puzzle and then all the littles exchanged valentines. They were beyond adorable. ❤️ I love Tykes Storytime. 💖 On Monday afternoons four of my favorite people come in and snuggle me while Mom tutors a couple of them in literacy. By 5:00pm on Mondays I’m completely waxed. My kitten fur is so mussed up it takes me hours to get it clean again…but it’s worth it. Tuesday and Wednesday were normal days. Sporadic bouts of flurry and activity. Thursday, however, was NOT NORMAL. That was the aforementioned snow day. There was no school and when the school closes for inclement weather so does the library, whatever inclement means. Hope to see you there! Thistle, the Library Kitten! Woof Woof, Briar, speaking. :) I’m four and a half months old now, but I’m getting pretty big. Mom says I’m GIGANTIC, whatever that means. Mom and Dad throw the ball for me a lot. It’s one of my favorite games. Don’t tell Mom I said this, but Dad can throw the ball a lot farther than she can. She’s kinda small though, so maybe she will throw it farther when she grows up. :) Mom says The Friends of the Library introductory genealogy class last Thursday had a good turnout. Twelve people attended and learned about many tools to get their family history recorded. Snacks and fellowship were enjoyed. Tune in in April for an in-depth look at the FamilySearch Wiki. Date to be announced shortly. Here’s a brief run-down of the programming going on at the library on a regular basis:
Do you need an activity for your busy beaver peeps on the weekend?
All supplies provided for free! Mark it on your calendar and come join us for some fun!! Here are three new books to consider for a book club: Echo House by Ward Just: An epic chronicle of three generations of Washington power brokers and the women who loved them (except when they didn't), Echo House is Ward Just's masterpiece. The Washington Post described it as "a fascinating if ultimately painful fairy tale, complete with a family curse. The decline of the Behls represents the decline of Washington from the bright dawn of the American century into the gathering shadows of an alien new millennium.". The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry: Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning a letter arrives, addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl, from a woman he hasn't heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye. But before Harold mails off a quick reply, a chance encounter convinces him that he absolutely must deliver his message to Queenie in person. In his yachting shoes and light coat, Harold Fry embarks on an urgent quest. Determined to walk six hundred miles to the hospice, Harold believes that as long as he walks, Queenie will live. A novel of charm, humor, and profound insight into the thoughts and feelings we all bury deep within our hearts, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry introduces Rachel Joyce as a wise--and utterly irresistible--storyteller. Death Focus by Anne Perry: On vacation from London on the beautiful Italian coast, twenty-eight-year-old Elena Standish and her older sister, Margot, have finally been able to move on from the lasting trauma of the Great War, in which the newly married Margot lost her husband and the sisters their beloved brother. Touring with her camera in hand, Elena has found new inspiration in the striking Italian landscape, and she’s met an equally striking man named Ian. When Ian has to leave unexpectedly, Elena—usually the more practical of the sisters—finds she’s not ready to part from him, and the two share a spontaneous train trip home to England. But a shocking sequence of events disrupts their itinerary, forcing Elena to personally deliver a message to Berlin on Ian’s behalf, one that could change the fate of Europe. Back home, Elena’s diplomat father and her secretive grandfather—once head of MI6, unbeknownst to his family—are involved in their own international machinations. Worried when Elena still hasn’t returned from Italy, her grandfather starts to connect the dots between her change in plans and an incident in Berlin, where Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich are on the rise. It seems the message Elena delivered has forced her into a dangerous predicament, and her grandfather’s old contacts from MI6 may be the only people who can get her out alive—if Elena can tell the difference between her allies and her enemies. Stay tuned for a few more book club possibilities next week! What activities, classes, or get-togethers of any kind would you like to attend at your beautiful Malvern Public Library? The library belongs to our community…so let’s use it! May your life be filled with many tummy rubs! Briar, the Library Puppy! Meoowww,
Thistle, here. :) Our Saturday movie showing of the Mitchells vs. The Machines was a bust. We missed you all except for a couple of super sweet ladies that stopped in to say, “Hi”. Mom took Briar to see the movie, but I stayed home and played with the neighbor’s kittens. Mom said Briar was good…I find that hard to believe. Briar still thinks I’m her own personal plush toy, along with all the other kittens at our neighbors’. You should see when she tries to play with the adult cats…Binksley lets her have it! LOL. Sometimes I want to, but mostly we just play. She’s a spaz, but I love her. (Mom says I have to, ‘cause she’s my sister.) My mom says I’m weird…’cause I like chocolate. Don’t all kittens like chocolate? I like to share Mom’s chocolate pudding, hot cocoa, or chocolate brownie. She usually lets me lick the bowl when she’s done, but I think she should share from the beginning. She doesn’t agree and, well…I think that’s rude. Mom says The Friends of the Library will be hosting an evening introductory genealogy class at the library on Thursday, February 9th from 6:30-7:30 pm. Learn how to get started and where to begin. Do you need an activity for your busy beaver peeps on the weekend?
All supplies are provided for free! Mark it on your calendar and come join us for some fun!! Here are three new books to consider for a book club: The Lincoln Conspiracy: The Secret Plot to Kill America’s 16th President—and Why It Failed by Brad Meltzer: Everyone knows the story of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination in 1865, but few are aware of the original conspiracy to kill him four years earlier in 1861, literally on his way to Washington, DC, for his first inauguration. The conspirators were part of a pro-Southern secret society that didn’t want an anti-slavery President in the White House. They planned an elaborate scheme to assassinate the brand-new President in a Baltimore train station as Lincoln’s inauguration train passed through en route to the Capital. The plot was investigated by famed detective Allan Pinkerton, who infiltrated the group with undercover agents, including one of the first female private detectives in America. Had the assassination succeeded, there would have been no Lincoln Presidency, and the course of the Civil War and American history would have forever been altered. Olive, Again by Elizabeth Strout: You don’t have to have read Olive Kitteridge to appreciate Olive, Again, but you’ll probably want to. Like a base coat of paint, it adds depth and helps the finish colors pop. Explaining the genesis of her sequel, Strout has written, “That Olive! She continues to surprise me, continues to enrage me, continues to sadden me, and continues to make me love her.” Well, that Elizabeth Strout! She continues to amaze (if no longer surprise) me. In book after book, from Amy and Isabelle to Anything is Possible, she’s plumbed the heartaches and headaches of her characters, capturing their regrets, their moments of grace, and their flawed humanity with clear-eyed compassion. A master of the story cycle form which Sherwood Anderson put his stamp on with Winesburg, Ohio, Strout has at this point pretty much out-Winesburged him with her cumulative, time-lapse portrait of the people of Crosby, Maine. The new novel starts shortly after Olive Kitteridge ended, when her ornery title character, lonely after the death of her husband Henry, struck up an unlikely friendship with Jack Kennison, a Harvard professor whom she and Henry had dismissed as one of those entitled, arrogant retirees from out-of-state. Her opinion changed after she found Jack collapsed on a riverside path, and Olive learned that he, too, was lonely following the recent death of his wife, and that he, too, regretted his alienation from his only child. Shoe Dog by Phil Knight: Nike co-founder Phil Knight urges young people and entrepreneurs to follow a calling, even if their idea seems crazy. In Shoe Dog, he discusses the story of how his own Crazy Idea turned into the globally recognized brand, Nike. He describes how he built Nike, offering insights into the difficult, imperfect process of starting a business. In this guide, we’ll discuss the events that led to the creation of Nike (including Knight’s Crazy Idea, his first shoe company, and the challenges he faced) and Nike itself. We’ll also explore Knight’s advice and reflections on why Nike succeeded, such as creating a brand identity and surrounding himself with a great team. Along the way, we’ll offer perspectives from other entrepreneurs on success and overcoming obstacles. Stay tuned for a few more book club possibilities next week! What activities, classes, or get-togethers of any kind would you like to attend at your beautiful Malvern Public Library? The library belongs to our community…so let’s enjoy it! May your Mom share her chocolate pudding with you! Thistle, the Library Kitten! BowWow, Briar barking, I mean speaking. :) I have had such a busy life, so far. I go bye-bye with Mom and Dad a lot! Sometimes we get to go to Bomgaars and I get to meet so many people! One time, I went with Mom and Dad to do errands and two different ladies at two different drive-thrus gave me yummy treats!! Then mom and dad got me this delicious round shaped slab of meat with bread on both sides ‘cause I was so good in the store. It was delicious!!!! I didn’t used to like riding in the car, but it's growing on me. :) This past week I had lots of people come in to see me, and my sister, Thistle, at the library. I am learning not to jump on the little ones during storytime, but it’s so hard not to. I just love little kids soooooo much! Mom will bring me out to sit and let the littles pet me. I want to go to them, but Mom says, “No”. I have to let them come to me. If I get too excited Mom makes me go back to hang out with Hans. I love Hans, but kids are so much FUN!! Mom always tells people to tell me, “Off” if I jump up on them. (I LOVE IT when people sit down and give me lovies…but sometimes I get a little over exuberant. 😬 It’s hard bein’ a puppy.) Mom still doesn’t like it when I chew on my sister, Thistle, but she’s so fun to play with! Besides, sometimes Thistle starts it. Mom says The Friends of the Library will be hosting an evening introductory genealogy class at the library on Thursday, February 9th from 6:30-7:30pm. You should see my pedigree chart!!! My Mom can’t wait to start a book club that would meet once a month to discuss a book we all read at the same time. She received a few new titles with multiple copies this week. If any of them flip your skirt she’d love to hear from you. The new titles this week are:
Hearing these summaries makes me wish I could read…I’m glad Mom reads to me. In case you didn’t know, here’s a brief run-down of the programming going on at the library on a regular basis:
We’re working on starting a hand crafting club that will meet once a month where you will bring whatever “project” you’re working on. What would you think of the second Thursday of the month at 4:00pm? Call my Mom, Lisa Formhals, or, Hans Leitner, at the library (712-624-8554) to give your input on what activities you’d like to do at your library. The library belongs to our community…let’s use it! Saturdays with Averie (activities appropriate for school age children and families):
All classes are free! Mark it on your calendar and come join us for some fun!! May your Mom throw the ball for you often, Woof-woof! Briar, the Library Puppy Meeooowww, Thistle here. :) I LOVE coming to work with Mom! I get to see so many people and they give me all kinds of lovies. It’s the best! I lead a very busy life at the library. I must groom myself, eat, sleep, play with Briar, sleep, run from Briar, get the zoomies, try to eat Mom’s food (she usually shares a little, but sometimes I have to get a little pushy), play with kids, and sleep some more. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you. Mom closed the library at 5:00pm last Monday. She fed me dinner and sat down to catch up on emails etc. When I was done eating, I went on a little walk about and then I fell asleep. I won’t say where, because it was a really great hiding place. So good, in fact, that Mom couldn’t find me, and she and Briar looked for me for over an hour! I’m a heavy sleeper so I don’t hear when Mom calls me if I’m asleep. To make a long story short…I spent my first night EVER alone…in the library. Boy was I glad to see Mom Tuesday morning! I stayed right by her or on her all day. I haven’t ever been alone for that long before…It wasn’t fun at all. There wasn’t anyone to play with or snuggle with and no one gave me petses. I’m definitely not a fan of alone time. I definitely LOVE being with my family. Speaking of family… Have you ever wanted to get your family history together but just didn’t know where to start? The Friends of the Library will be hosting an evening Introductory Genealogy Class at the library on Thursday, February 9th from 6:30-7:30pm. Learn how to get started, what forms to use, what tools are available and more. The class is free so come one, come all!! Mom said to remind you about starting a book club that would meet once or twice a month to discuss the book we’re all reading. She said you could meet at the library or at Classic Café for a snack or whatever floats everybody’s boat. She received a few new titles with multiple copies this week. The new titles this week are: Peace Like A River by Leif Enger: The story of a father raising his three children in 1960s Minnesota, Peace Like a River is at once a heroic quest, a tragedy, a love story, and a haunting meditation on the possibility of magic in the everyday world.; The Horse Whisperer by Nicholas Evans: It charts a tragic accident to 2 girls and their horses. One of the girls and her horse die while the other girl and her beloved horse are severely traumatized; and The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini: The Kite Runner is the story of Amir, a Sunni Muslim, who struggles to find his place in the world because of the aftereffects and fallout from a series of traumatic childhood events. If you’re interested in reading any of these titles, as a group, please let us know! In case you didn’t know, here’s a brief run-down of the programming going on at the library on a weekly basis: (Also, Briar and I are usually at the library on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, when Mom is at work.:)
We’re working on starting a stitch ‘n ‘itch club that will meet once or twice a month where you will bring whatever “project” you’re working on. Stay tuned for time and place. Saturdays with Averie (activities appropriate for school age children and families):
All of her classes are free! Mark it on your calendar and come join us for some fun!! Any questions? Please call the library at 712-624-8554. Stay fluffy, Thistle, the Library Kitten Woof Woof, Briar, again. :) Hans told me people come into the library on the days my mom is not working and they ask to see Thistle and me, then they are bummed to find out we’re not there. So, I thought I should tell you all that Thistle and I go to the library on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 10:00am-5:00pm. Dad picks us up a little early sometimes, but not usually. I’m super bummed I’ve missed out on some awesome petses. Thistle is too, though she doesn’t get near as excited as I do for petses. Mom says that it’s a good thing she doesn’t, but I’m not so sure. Anyway, please come to see us again sometime. :) We missed you all this past Saturday for painting with Averie. She will be holding more classes on the following Saturdays:
All of her classes are free! Mark it on your calendar and come join us for some fun!! Have you wanted to get your family history together but just don’t know where to start? The Friends of the Library will be hosting an evening introductory genealogy class at the library on Thursday, February 9th from 6:30-7:30pm. The class is free so come one, come all!! Mom wanted me to ask if any of you are interested in reading a book for a book club that would meet once or twice a month to discuss the book we’re all reading. She said you could meet at the library or at Classic Café for a snack or whatever works for everyone (I hope you choose the library ‘cause I can’t go to Classic Café’…just sayin’). She recently acquired multiple copies of several titles. The titles she has so far are:
If there is another book you would like Mom to get for a book club read, she is all ears. Mom thinks it would be great fun to have adults and teens read the same book…talk about some interesting discussions to be had! We do have a book club that meets at the library every Thursday at 4:00pm, but we don’t read the same book. We all talk about the different books we’re reading, and it broadens the mind through other genres (whatever that means). Mom also wanted to know if there was anyone out there who would like to start a “movie buffs” group. There are so many cool movies to discuss and watch!! I LOVE snuggles and petses during movie time. Actually, I love snuggles and petses anytime!! Please call the library at 712-624-8554 if you’d like to start that hand sewing/crafting group or if you’d like to puzzle. I’m trying hard to be a good girl and working on obeying. It’s hard to be obedient when you’re a puppy…especially when there are children to play with and smells to sniff and sounds to...squirrel! Until next time, Briar, the Library Puppy Meowy Year Greetings,
Thistle here.:) Did you know we had a Health Fair at the library this past Saturday? It was totally cool!! Lots of people gave me hugs and snuggles. I like that. Mom says we’d like to give a big THANK YOU to all those who came to share their information on health with us. Thank you to Club 321; 5210, Let’s Go Malvern; Red Oak YMCA; Malvern Medical Clinic; Methodist Physician’s Clinic; Mills County Public Health; Wabash Trace Nature Trail; Montgomery County Hospital; Kohll’s Pharmacy; Glenwood Nutrition; Jody’s Natural Kitchen; Hilltop Animal Hospital; Friends of the Malvern Public Library; Sovereign Martial Arts and all those who came and helped make this health fair a success! We were tickled to have about 50 people at this event. Mom says the participants she talked to want to do it again next year!! There is a new girl who is volunteering at our library. Her name is Averie. We are excited to have her with us! She will be doing activities for kids/teens and families on Saturdays from 1:30pm-2:30pm and occasionally showing a family movie with popcorn from 1:00-3:00pm. Here’s what she has planned for you so far: Saturday, January 14th from 1:30-2:30pm, Painting in Carnegie Saturday, January 21st from 1:30-2:30pm, Pipe Cleaner Craft Saturday, January 28th from 1:30-2:30pm, Egg Carton Animals Saturday, February 1st from 1:00-3:00pm, The Mitchells vs. Machines (Movie with popcorn) Saturday, February 11th from 1:30-2:30pm, Watercolor Craft Averie is an artist and is excited to share time creating with all of you! We hope to see you at the library!! Mom says we’re running behind this week so we don’t have any more time to share. But we’ll talk to you again next week. Have a wonderful week and come by and see me!! Meow ‘til next time, Thistle, The Library Kitten Woof Woof New Year Greetings,
This is Briar woofing, I mean, speaking. Here’s hoping you all had a woofiful Happy New Year!! I did! I got to spend it in Cherokee, Iowa playing with my mom, Ellie, and my older sister, Gweny. We played tug o’ war and wrestling ALL THE TIME!!! It was so awesome! Mom even brought my squeaky toys. Dad REALLY loved that. This past week I got to play with soooooo many people at the library. Lots of kids and adults gave me petses. I am trying to learn not to jump on people, but I just get so excited I can barely stand it! Mom tells me, “Off”, when I do that. It’s hard to be obedient. This week is our super cool health fair on Saturday, January 7, 2023, from 10:00 am-2:00 pm at the library. There will be a whole bunch of people there with health information on lots of different aspects of health. Mom says it’s the time of year when many people make New Year's resolutions. My New Year resolution is to chew up more sticks. Sticks are so delicious. Mom wanted me to ask if any of you would be interested in starting a sewing/crafting-by-hand group at the library. She says it’s when people get together and work on something they are creating with their hands while chatting and visiting with each other. Sort of a grown-up play group…well, at least not for toddlers like me. She also wanted me to ask if there are any avid puzzlers out there (whatever avid means…) that would be interested in starting a puzzling group at the library. Mom says it’s another playgroup, but for all ages. We have floor puzzles and regular puzzles from toddlers to 950 years old, like Moses! It’s a great way to work your brain and build relationships with the people in your community (I think that means the place where you live). We will be starting a fun time for kids and families on Saturdays from 1:00-3:00 pm at the library. There will be a different activity on most Saturdays. From movies to arts, crafts, legos, duplos, clay sculpting, painting, and other fun things. Stay tuned to our website, malvernlibrary.weebly.com, and our Facebook page, Malvern Public Library for details. Mom is going to start story time at East Mills Elementary School this week. She will be spending time on Thursday afternoons with a few different classes each week. We are so excited about this! Mom says when I become more obedient, I will get to go too!!!! I’m so excited for the day when I can have children read stories to me! Well, we’d like to invite you all to come to check out our books and movies or to just drop by for a friendly visit. Petses are always welcome. Until next time, Briar, the Library Puppy |
