BOOK CLUB READER’S REVIEWS:
At Malvern Public Library, our Book Club is comprised of some of the community’s most avid readers. In starting off the new year, we decided to try something new and write reviews for some of our favorite titles we are reading. Here are some of new reviews from our readers. All Roads Lead Home: Bellingwood Series Book 1 by Diane Greenwood Muir A Review by Linda Henrikus: “Welcome to Iowa – Bellingwood, to be exact. Bellingwood, Iowa – a non-existent town, but representative of many small towns everywhere. We meet Polly Giller, the main character, as she returns to Iowa from a busy life in Boston. She buys an old schoolhouse to renovate and starts a new chapter in her life. Polly has a dream of transforming the schoolhouse into a community area where lots of fun activities can be done and while also serving as a home for her. She is welcomed by four women from the community, and as the series grows, so do the friendships between these five women, and their families grow. We also meet Henry Sturtz, the contractor Polly has hired for the remodeling. You will enjoy getting to know Henry, as he has a major role in the community and in Polly’s life. Bellingwood holds many secrets, and it seems as though it is Polly’s mission to unearth them. Early in the book, the first secret comes tumbling out when a ceiling is being brought down – skulls and bones – what? How? Who? All these questions are sure to keep Polly, her friends and us, as readers, busy throughout the story. Come to Bellingwood and enjoy life in small town Iowa as Polly and her friends lead us from one adventure to another.” The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House by Kate Andersen Bower A Review by Barbara Vorthman “This is a fascinating view of the workers and staff of the White House. It is a portrait of what it’s like to take care of the first family. The stories start with the Kennedy era and go through the Obamas. The Residence is both an elegant picture and very readable, important White House history. As an everyday American, we don’t get a glimpse of what life is like in the fishbowl that is the White House. The book gives the reader an understanding of the presidents and their families as human beings. The book doesn’t tear down any president or speak poorly of any of them. The Residence shows the loyalty of the staff to the first families, their jobs and “the House” as it is lovingly referred to. The author interviewed butlers, maids, chefs, florists, doormen and other staffers through 50 years of the White House. A very enjoyable read.” This title is currently available for check out from our collection, so be sure to stop in and check it out for yourself. This one comes highly recommended from our very own Book Club, which meets regularly every Tuesday night at 5:00 pm. We would love to see you there!
