Summer Reading Program Stop in now to complete the 10 challenges of Read Off the Beaten Path before October 1st to receive prizes! Challenge 6, our highlight for this month, is to read a book published or set in the decade you were born. Black Elk Speaks, published in 1932, is the story of the Oglala Lakota visionary and healer Nicholas Black Elk (1863–1950) and his people during momentous twilight years of the nineteenth century, offering readers much more than a precious glimpse of a vanished time. Black Elk’s searing visions of the unity of humanity and Earth, conveyed by John G. Neihardt, have made this book a classic that crosses multiple genres. Whether appreciated as the poignant tale of a Lakota life, as a history of a Native nation, or as an enduring spiritual testament, Black Elk Speaks is unforgettable. According to library patron Bonnie Mansfield: “This book is full of some of the remarkable battles of the years, such as Little Bighorn and at Wounded Knee. Maps are included, as well as paintings and a listing of Lakota words. Loved the way they refer to days of the week, and the seasons!” Stop in to read this or another book in our collection to complete the 6th challenge. Don’t like any of the books in our collection? Feel free to read a book from home!
