Tell me, where does one begin when so very much has to be said? This has been a summer that our Malvern Public Library will not soon forget. Between the recent Summer Reading Program, the Carnegie Centennial celebration, the dedicated genealogical work being done by our Archives volunteers, our growing social media presence and the numerous programs that continue to draw in people of all ages and backgrounds, it seems as if there is no end to the excitement for us here! Back in March, our Friends of the Malvern Public Library launched a very special campaign that comes but once in a lifetime - the Carnegie Library Centennial Fundraiser – to which you all responded with great enthusiasm and your incredible generosity. We are so grateful for the wonderful support that our community continues to give to our Malvern Public Library. This passion for the arts and education is nothing short of inspiring, and you all make such a tremendous difference for our community. Our library is in the process of commissioning a specially constructed frame for the print memorializing the names of all who pledged at the $100 level. This commemorative wall hanging will soon find a permanent home in our library’s Historic Corner. On May the 4th (Be With You) Day at the Malvern Public Library, our Comics & Cosplay Club members enjoyed an exciting photoshoot with Darth Vader and a big screen presentation of one of the original films. Popcorn, trivia and prizes made this a fun night for all, and a special commercial starring Darth Vader even made its way onto the library’s Facebook page to commemorate this special day. On June 2, 2017, The Malvern Public Library teamed up with MABA to co-coordinate the School’s Out Party with our Carnegie Centennial Celebration. That evening was a fun experience for all who came. Festivities at the library that were originally planned for Paddock Park were moved indoors to “beat the heat”. Our youngest partygoers enjoyed playing board games while our teens had fun battling it out with eachother in a video game tournament. The rest of us enjoyed spending time in Carnegie sharing memories of our historic library and remembering the people who made it what it is today. There were plenty of smiles, laughter and delicious desserts to make this centennial one that our library will never forget. Our Comics & Cosplayers remain as busy as ever with their involvement at our library and in the realm of social media. If you are a fan of the library on Facebook or frequent our website at all, you will notice a new promotional ad has been published for our Comics & Cosplay Club. This is but one shining example of the talent our youth have to share with the community. Between the awesome 3-dimensional cherry blossom sculptures, perler bead creations and even their very own Comics & Cosplay Club Manifesto, we continue to see a great deal of talent come from our youth. We have so much fun learning about Japanese culture and exploring new worlds at our Comics & Cosplay Club through various workshops in writing, art, music and even YouTube language lessons. Most recently, members enjoyed learning how to make their very own traditional ice cream mochi, a Japanese treat. It’s hard to know which part of that evening brought the most excitement – working together as a team to beat the mochi dough, or eating the final product! Our Summer Reading Program: Build A Better World (July 7 – July 14) was an awesome educational experience for all ages in learning about and celebrating the world’s many cultures. The accompanying photos capture some of the magic we all experienced together. Together, we explored themes of intercultural exchange through various group activities, discussions and workshops. Each participant picked a book to read that was about or from another culture they wanted to learn more about, engaged in group discussion on topics of intercultural exchange and addressing prejudice, wrote and panelled out their very own cultural comic book superhero stories and experienced the sights and sounds of the Japanese taiko drum in an epic workshop finale to the weeklong program performed by the Kokyo Taiko drummers group from Lincoln, NE. Thank you to all of our Summer Readers who shared their wonderful talent and told their cultural stories; your passion and enthusiasm for the beauty that diversity brings helps us to "build a better world"! This summer has also seen the addition of several new programs for our library that, as always, remain free and open to all. These new programs are our RPG Club, the Books on Screen program and Tai Chi classes. The Malvern Senior Center and the library are now co-sponsoring a new Tai Chi class on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:00 am, so come in a comfy pair of pants and bring some water for a relaxing workout. Our Writer’s Club is really starting to pick up, and we are looking for more people to join in the fun. We meet every Monday at 4:00 pm and would love to see you there. Also worth mentioning here is our Book Club that meets every Tuesday at 5:00 pm. We like to keep things pretty informal and simply get together to share and discuss the books we are reading on our own time. We are open to all ages and have the most interesting conversations! Would you like to join us? Our Comics & Cosplay Club continues to be as exciting as ever. You, of course, are always welcome to join us. We have a lot of fun learning about different cultures, methods of writing, watching movies, having cosplay parties and so much more. There is always something new and different happening every week here at our Malvern Public Library. We would love to have you! If you would like to learn more about the programs we offer at the Malvern Public Library, feel free to call or drop in and ask any questions you might have! Our full calendar of events can be viewed both on our website and on Facebook. Facebook users have the option of RSVPing to our events online. Our library has even started its own YouTube channel that publishes content related to our many programs and events. Feel free to check us out! Summer Readers shared their cultural superhero comic book stories. Learning to play the traditional Japanese taiko drums together. Japan Taiko Drum Workshop participants got to try some squid (it was delicious)!
