The Library Monthly
By Rebecca Bassich June has proven to be one of the busiest months of the year thus far for our Malvern Public Library. We kicked it all off with our brand new Comics & Cosplay Club in the first week which has quickly become our most popular program yet with just under 12 attendees for each of the past few meetings. While the club is certainly open to all ages, it has been especially popular among young adults who are passionate about sharing their love of all things comic book and manga related. Library Director, Rebecca Bassich, starts each meeting with a brief Japanese lesson during which participants are able to work together as an informal classroom in an effort to learn to speak and write in Japanese. The activity following these lessons does vary from meeting to meeting, however it typically consists of a Show & Tell session that gives members an opportunity to showcase a favorite manga or comic book related item they own, fanfiction, fan art or a cosplay costume. The occasional contest encourages friendly competition amongst members in selecting a favorite Show & Tell entry for a prize. Each 2-hour meeting then concludes with viewing a favorite manga/anime or comic book related movie and/or series. Members are encouraged to attend the meetings dressed as their favorite fictional character and to bring a snack to share during the movie that they feel their chosen personality would enjoy. Starting in our second week was the annual Summer Reading program. The objective for participants was to read as many minutes as possible in just under a week, all with the aim of competing for the grand prize. Along the way, each participant won a series of smaller prizes for satisfying a series of smaller reading goals throughout the week. The participant having the most minutes read by the end was granted the honor of picking out a movie and the pizza flavors that would be enjoyed by all at the conclusion of the competition. Congratulations to our top reader, Connie Crawley, who finished with a total of 24 hours and 45 minutes read in just 5 days. Needless to say, Malvern has some very dedicated readers! As we look ahead to July, the Malvern Public Library is hoping to jumpstart a new Literacy Class for all ages and reading levels. If you struggle with or simply want to improve upon your reading skills, we want to hear from you! Our wonderful mentors are ready to assist. Participation is completely free and at no cost to you.
